SUMMARY:Glasgow Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:October Meeting: Understanding Orchid Names\nConfused by orchid names on social media or plant labels? \nYou’re not alone! This session will demystify how orchid names are written and explain the conventions behind them — from genus and species to hybrids and cultivars. You’ll learn how to correctly label your plants and where to find reliable naming information\, helping you record and share your orchids with confidence. \nJoin us for an afternoon that brings clarity to orchid naming and strengthens your understanding of the plants you love. We will also have some orchid plants and seedlings for sale. \n\n\n\nGeneral Information\n  \nOur Glasgow meetings offer a friendly and relaxed space to learn more about orchids\, whether you’re just starting out or have years of growing experience. Each session features either an illustrated talk or a practical demonstration led by our resident experts\, who are always happy to answer questions on cultivation\, pests\, diseases\, and general orchid care. \nYou’ll also find a table show of members’ plants — a great chance to see a variety of orchids\, share ideas\, and enjoy informal conversation with fellow enthusiasts. Refreshments are available throughout the afternoon. \nDoors open at 1:30pm\, and your first visit is free. If you’re curious about orchids or simply want to meet friendly growers\, you’ll be very welcome. \nTo join the Society visit our MEMBERSHIP page. \nPlease note that there is no parking within the Botanic Gardens. SUMMARY:Glasgow Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:September Meeting: Discovering Restrepia & Practical Propagation\n  \nJoin us for an afternoon dedicated to one of the most distinctive genera within the Pleurothallidinae — Restrepia. These compact orchids are admired for their elegant form and habit of producing successive blooms from a single leaf\, rewarding growers with colour and character throughout the year. Our introduction will explore what makes Restrepia so special\, from their miniature growth to their remarkable floral diversity. \nFollowing this\, Christine Nicholson the Orchid Proagator at Glasgow Botanic Gardens will lead a hands‑on demonstration showing how to propagate Restrepia using leaf cuttings — a simple\, effective technique for expanding your collection and sharing plants with fellow enthusiasts \nWe look forward to seeing you there for an afternoon of learning and hands‑on orchid growing. \nThere will be our usual table display\, so bring your flowering orchids for us all to admire. Teas\, coffee and cake will be available. \n  \n\nGeneral Information\n  \nOur Glasgow meetings offer a friendly and relaxed space to learn more about orchids\, whether you’re just starting out or have years of growing experience. SUMMARY:Edinburgh Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:August Meeting: ‘Oiling the Wheels of Pollination‘\nOil-pollination syndrome in orchids is a highly specialised mutualism in which flowers produce non-volatile lipid oils instead of (or alongside) nectar\, and these oils are collected by specialist oil-gathering bees. This short presentation will explain the partnership between orchid and bee which is a prime example of c0-evolution\, where both species have adapted to depend on each other. \nGeneral Information:\nOur meetings in Edinburgh can consist of an illustrated talk or practical sessions where you can learn aspects of orchid cultivation under the guidance of our resident experts who will also be happy to answer your queries on orchid cultivation and/or pest and disease control. We usually have a table show of members’ plants with plenty of opportunities to socialise and exchange ideas. Refreshments are available. Why not come along and see what we have to offer.
